Former Ghanaian footballer Augustine Arhinful has labelled the decision by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) that reappointed Carlos Queiroz for a second stint as head coach of Ghana’s Black Stars as ‘wrong and needed pragmatic approach’.

According to the former Black Stars striker, the association should have treated Carlos Queiroz’s parting statements immediately after the 2026 World Cup as a serious wake-up call regarding systemic issues rather than simply moving on to the next head coach.

‘’If I were a member of the FA Executive Council or the President of the GFA, I would have never pushed forward to reassign Queiroz after statements he made immediately after the 2026 World Cup, that indicates that he had already resigned from his role as head coach of the Black Stars – the BBC had even reported his resignation’’ he told Ahenfie Overtime Sports.

‘’He made some directed remarks to the leadership of the GFA that suggest if reforms should come it should start from top and especially from the administration-he stated categorically’’

‘’And if Queiroz says it should come from the top, who do you think he is referring to? ‘’ he questioned.

Carlos Queiroz was appointed head coach of national men’s team of Ghana on April 13, 2026 replacing Otto Addo ahead of 2026 FIFA World Cup, on a short-term contract.

He initially stepped down after leading Ghana to the Round of 32 of the World Cup (1 win, 2 draws, 2 defeats) before elimination by Colombia.

The Portuguese Tactician was reappointed by the GFA on September 2, 2026, for a second stint to prepare the Black Stars for the 2027 AFCON qualification, international window and building toward the 2030 World Cup.

Following a difficult run of results in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers - back-to-back defeats: a 2-0 loss to Côte d'Ivoire and a historic 4-2 defeat to The Gambia on home soil surrendering a 2–0 lead.

Black Stars tumbled to the bottom of Group C and subsequently Queiroz’s contract was mutually terminated by the GFA on October 1, 2026.

The coaching position therefore became vacant following Queiroz’s departure.

A five-member Technical Search Committee was constituted by the GFA and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation to identify, assess and recommend a suitable coach for the vacant position.

Reports emerging from the association indicate that head Coach of Black Queens, Kim Lars could be tasked temporarily alongside other two local technicians to lead the Black Stars on interim basis ahead of 2027 AFCON qualifying double-header against Somalia in November.

Medeama SC gaffer, Ibrahim Tanko and Black Stars assistant coach Godwin Attram are the other two technicians tasked with the new role.
