The Ashanti Regional Fire Command has stepped up its fire safety education ahead of the festive season, urging residents, traders and business owners to follow safety rules to prevent fire outbreaks and protect lives and property.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, DO3 Atta-Aheng Mensah, said educating the public, enforcing fire safety rules and engaging communities are important ways to reduce fire incidents in the region. He urged traders to be careful when using fire and electrical appliances, especially in markets and business centres.
Highlighting the challenges facing the Service, DO3 Atta-Aheng Mensah disclosed that the region has five fire tenders, two of which are currently out of service due to faults. He said measures were underway to repair the faulty vehicles and improve the Service’s capacity to respond to emergencies.
In an interview with Kofi Tuwohofo on Anopa Ahenfie on Ahenfie TV/FM, DO3 Atta-Aheng Mensah stressed the need for regular fire safety education, especially in markets and busy business areas. He urged traders and the public to handle fire carefully and follow safety rules to prevent fire outbreaks.
Commenting on the recent fire outbreak at the shoe section of the Tafo-Moro Market, DO3 Atta-Aheng Mensah said investigations were ongoing to establish the cause of the incident.
He disclosed that some eyewitnesses had reported seeing people cooking in the area before the fire broke out. However, he stressed that the Service would conduct thorough investigations before drawing any conclusions about the cause of the fire.
