Emmanuel Agyemang Badu has highlighted the need for Ghanaian Premier League clubs to deliberately shift from casual set ups into a more competitive standard, invest in better infrastructure and quality talent in order to compete effectively in African club competitions like the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup.

In an interview on ‘Ahenfie Full Time Sports’, the former Ghana international emphasized that for success, clubs in the nation’s top-flight league must raise their standards, groom technically experienced local and foreign talent after qualifications into African club competitions.

‘’ A domestic club moving into Africa competition against giants like TP Mazembe, Esperance cannot see predictable outcomes if it does not beef up quality talent, injects funds to acquire experienced players who have featured in CAF tournaments to maximize performance’’

‘’Some Clubs even sell their best talent in a particular season to other African giants before competing against these same giant clubs - clubs like Medeama SC may engage players from local and foreign Italy but do those players have that experience to play on Africa soil’’

‘’Maintaining squad with same talent and performance ahead of Africa campaign will not work because players may lack some least standard and level of skill for such competitions - so after qualifications that is not all’’

He reiterated that clubs should be ready to invest heavily in the transfer market ahead of CAF Champions competitions.

‘’Once a club qualifies for Africa it needs to inject money and get good players to secure a place in the money zone stage which benefits the clubs and the nation - You don’t just go there and add up to the numbers’’

Talking on infrastructure, the International Relations Manager for Ghana Premier League side Aduana FC indicated that Ghanaian clubs competing or aiming to compete in Confederation of African Football (CAF) inter-club competitions must also invest in modern training facilities and pitches for desired outcomes.

Badu also urged African football clubs to also raise their standards to bridge the gap with global competitors in Europe and other continents.

2025 / 26 Ghana Premier League champions, Medeama SC were eliminated from the 2026/27 TotalEnergies CAF Champions League preliminary round after suffering a 4–1 aggregate defeat to DR Congo giants, TP Mazembe.

Kumasi based Nations FC was also knocked out of the CAF Confederation Cup after suffering a 2-1 aggregate defeat to Mali's FC Diarra in the preliminary round, leaving Ghana with no club representatives in African inter-club competitions for the season.
